LOCATION:
The village of Wormerveer originated in the fifteenth century on the west bank of the Zaan near a ferry connection with Wormer that already existed at the time. In 1504, the first chapel was built. Along the banks of the Zaan, a predominantly single-sided development took shape, with the exception of the Dubbele Buurt.
In the seventeenth century, Wormerveer became an industrial village with businesses located outside the dykes along the Zaan. Perpendicular to the dike, there were several paths inland with industrial mills.
The house is located on Wandelweg, in Wormerveer Zuid. From Sloterkade, everything you could possibly want is within easy reach; all the new Zaan hotspots and cultural attractions are within walking or cycling distance.
In addition, the house is also very centrally located, allowing you to enjoy the historic architecture and tranquility that the village has to offer. The Zaanbocht, now better known as the Zaanboulevard, is within walking distance, and the Zaanse Schans is within cycling distance of the former office building.
What's more, all conceivable amenities such as schools, supermarkets, shops, and restaurants are within walking and/or cycling distance. The house is very easy to reach by both public transport and car, and there is plenty of parking space next to the house.
There are many different restaurants and cafés in the neighborhood, such as De Koffiezaak, Gingers, Batavia 1894, and Restaurant De Heeren van Kok. A wide range of supermarkets, bakeries, and caterers for your daily shopping needs are just around the corner on Zaanweg.
HISTORY:
The office building at Wandelweg 7 was built in 1913 as an extension of the Wormerveer municipality gas factory site. This factory had been in operation since 1863 and had been expanded several times. The last expansion took place in 1913, when a new office building and the adjacent director's residence were built.
The former office building of the Wormerveer municipal gasworks has architectural-historical value in terms of the construction, materials, and layout of the facades. The original layout and filling of the openings in the facades are also still present and are valuable as a reference for the spatial layout of the ground floor and are also valuable because of the materials and detailing. The roofing on the roof was installed in 1937 and provides an original appearance and is therefore of some value.
Inside, the original and valuable supporting structures of the floors are still present. The original roof structure, made of pine wood with Dutch trusses and crooked posts, is valuable because of its detailing, with the rafters and roof boarding featuring profiles.
The former office building has high cultural-historical value as one of the last remnants of the municipal gasworks in Wormerveer, which operated from 1863 to 1930. After the factory closed in 1930, the site was largely left undeveloped and is therefore easily recognizable in the current urban landscape of Wormerveer. In addition, the building has a high rarity value in terms of the materials used for the exterior and interior.
